Labels is an original work written and performed by Angela Bettoni, a 22-year-old MCAST final year BA Creative Arts student with Down Syndrome. The piece is about assumptions and myths that Angela has experienced, and it challenges people to see her for who she really is, looking beyond the labels. “I wanted to do a project centred around my advocacy in the performing arts. ‘Labels’ originated from a monologue that I had written for myself. In it I talked about the many labels that I have encountered in my daily life. I wrote down the labels that really hurt me on sticky paper. My idea was to have people, mirroring society, labelling me with these. I responded to each label in my movements. After the labels cover me, I show how I slowly overcome them and I rise above them, it shows that the labels don’t define me for who I am.”
Labels – Defying Perceptions. Performed the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST) Performing Arts Studio on 19 January 2024. Angela Bettoni Down Syndrome Advocate.
