Sofia visits the Down Syndrome Organization of Southern Nevada, a community hub that has supported people with Down syndrome and their families for more than two decades. The center offers programs for every age group, from early childhood through adulthood, and focuses on helping members build meaningful skills, confidence and independence. Their mission is centered on one powerful belief: regardless of our abilities, the sky is the limit.
Acting director Peter Whittingham takes Sofia on a tour and explains the organization’s three core pillars — education, employment and independent living. Through tutoring, job training, life-skills classes, social programs and advocacy support, the center works to create a world where people with Down syndrome are included, empowered and able to shape their own futures. Many staff members and volunteers have been part of the organization for years, building a strong sense of belonging and community. Visit www.dsosn.org/ to learn more.
Sofia also spends time with several members who embody these pillars every day:
• Nikki is fun-loving and determined. She reminds viewers never to underestimate her: “I’m more capable than people think I am.” Her dream is to become a singer and pianist.
• Aliah loves fashion and dancing — something she and Sofia have in common. She hopes to go to Hollywood and become an actress.
• Sophia is a creative writer and an inspirational speaker with big goals for the future.
• Leanne prides herself on kindness. She’s an artist and a cook with a dream of visiting Hawaii.
This episode celebrates the strength of community, the importance of inclusive opportunities, and the incredible potential that shines when people are supported, encouraged, and seen. For more information about connecting to community, visit https://nncil.org/youth/peer-support/…
