BALM is a duet performed by Angela Bettoni, a dancer with Down Syndrome, and Niels Plotard, a non-disabled dancer and multidisciplinary artist. Angela advocates for more inclusion of people with learning disabilities in the performing arts. BALM was choreographed by Rachel Calleja, with dramaturgy by Giovanni Sabelli Fioretti. BALM was inspired by monologues Angela had written about her feelings of being unseen – overlooked, labelled, utilized and categorized to fit into the tight spaces of an ableist society. But as Angela says in the video, BALM became the story of her journey of going from being unseen to being seen. BALM was supported by Arts Council Malta. Angela is sharing this video for the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) 2024. The IDPD is observed globally on December 3rd each year and provides an opportunity for governments, organizations, and communities to come together to raise awareness, promote inclusion, and take action to improve the lives of persons with disabilities. A mixed-ability physical theatre piece facilitated by Rachel Calleja and co-created and performed by Angela Bettoni and Niels Plotard, with the dramaturgical support of Giovanni Sabelli Fioretti. Sound score developed by Niels Plotard. Co-produced by Perypezye Urbane and Professional Media Presence project within the framework of Creative Europe. @angelabettoni18 @_rachelcalleja @nielsplotard
